Silicolgel does not remove nutrients and "good bacteria". It binds and removes toxic matter (bacteria) which, under normal circumstances, shouldn't be present in the gastrointestinal tract. In a comprehensive study (King et al.,1956), it showed that digestive enzymes of the gastrointestinal tracts such as amylase, pancreas-lipase, trypsin, pepsin, etc. are not deactivated by the adsorption of silicic acid.

The reason for the one hour gap is to avoid any chance of the Silicolgel particles interfering with the adsorption of any nutrients from food. So, there would be no risk to the effectiveness of Silicolgel, however a very slight risk that some nutrients from your meal may be bound, rather than absorbed into the body.  So the longer the gap, the lesser the risk.

The Silicolgel particles remain in the gut for up to an hour. Please be assured that drinking will not wash away the particles. It is absolutely fine to leave eating longer than an hour, the one hour guidance is to avoid the very slight chance that the particles may interpret some of the food nutrients as toxins. This is unlikely, however the gap of an hour eliminates any chance of this happening. The same rule applies to the taking of medicines.

Can Silicolgel help with constipation?

Silicolgel can help with IBS related constipation, when the constipation is caused by toxins in the gut. The silicolgel particles adsorb and remove toxins and irritants thus helping resolve the issue.  Where the constipation is related to dehydration, however, taking Silicolgel is not always helpful. We always recommend those suffering from constipation to increase their water intake sufficiently if they decide to take Silicolgel.
